Pro owner looking to add functionality

Without a up-to-date and fully functional kernel, the Oxnas based devices will no longer be officially supported.

Pro owner looking to add functionality

Postby stigslim » Mon May 14, 2012 11:07 pm

Hi peoples, I will try and keep it short and sweet but stick with me. Have got a Pro that i am looking to add samba to so i can use an Android device to manipulate files back and forth. As far as i have figured (being a total N00b), i gain controll of my plug using SSH and install a package installer which i then use to install Samba, right?. The questions i have are as follows, 1, i have read a few things and one of them said it ran from a USB stick, is this right or is this a different method?. 2, will i lose any of the functionality that i allready have, eg the mobile app and web UI?. 3 , Are there any other maintenance requirements needed after i have applied the extras, eg anthing needed to be done to HDD's that are or will be plugged in. Like i said lol stick with me. . I am sure there are a million others things i should have asked but hey i gotta start somewhere. Thanks in advance for any advice offered. Oh and 4, Do these plugs auto update firmware/OS? and if so will it still retain my extras after.

Hi,

I'll point a couple of things:
1- Our forum supports white space, please use it appropriately, where applicable. It's 10x easier to read when used correctly.
2- You're essentially referring to Optware (see NSLU2) in your initial description.
3- Since you've got a Pro, (and there weren't any bogus kirkwood having Pros like some B01's) I can actually safely say that no, there is a method available that will return your Pogoplug functionality on top of Arch Linux ARM. It's still quite new though.
4- Yes, you have to store the stuff somewhere, and on the NAND is not a safe place, Optware or ALARM.
5- You've got little reading to do.

I hope that is helpful.

Signed,

1)USB Stick works but a real drive is much more reliable and faster.
2) yes you will, but as warheads stated there is a brand new way to put it back, but it may be a bit scary for a newb to tackle right out of the gate.
3) if you follow the install guide on a single USB drive you should be golden.
4) no, but manual updates come now and then.

I was in your shoes about a year ago. Samba works very well once you get it configured. I am running from a 1 terabyte drive and also storing videos from my TiVo on the unit. I also share a couple of USB printers which can also be seen by my iPhone so I can print from there as well.

They can do more with the packages available, but these do what I need and once set up I just leave the alone.

Thanks guys, shame I was looking to add samba and keep all the other pogoplug stuff :( . I will be honest its frying my head a little, never done anything from a command prompt before so its all double Dutch right now. Figured the stick was set up and other than that the plug ran as out of the box. Like I said its all double Dutch, will read up but be warned I could be back.

Hi peeps back again :D , have followed a tutorial to install optware to USB http://blog.willhaley.com/optware-on-the-pogoplug/ and all seemed to be going well until i rebooted. when i returned to ssh to check with ipkg update all i got was ipkg not found?, so i figured i would go through the setup again. After starting again and formatting the USB stick i was unable to use the wget command (not found)?. The only reference i have found for this not working is that i now have more than one (ie the tutorial downloads a newer version) not that i know much lol. Any help you can offer for a n00b in a pickle would be much appretiated. Thanks for your patience.

This is the Arch Linux ARM forum. Please consult NSLU2 for Optware help.
Remember, Arch Linux ARM is completely donation-supported, and is totally awesome.
