The new linux-kirkwood package has been up for a few days now. Basically, if you don't know whether or not your system can support it, don't install it. If you know it can support it, then there isn't a problem. On install, the package also warns about uboot compatibility.

I don't see any reason for us to take responsibility for user ignorance, as nearly all of our attempts to safeguard against it fail anyway.

I did try this on my Dockstar. Installed the new uboot, seems great. Installed the linux-kirkwood package, it complained about a fatal error, could not find the /lib/modules/3.4.6.0-ARCH directory. So I reinstalled my current backup image and tried again, this time installing the linux-headers-kirkwood package 1st, which went fine. Same complaint from the kernel though. Tried to fool it by 1st creating that directory, it went further and then complained about missing modules.order and modules.builtin. Tried the same trick, created those two blank files, it seemed to finish ok then, but no gravy on reboot. Something else I must install perhaps?
Am I one of those that needs protection from themselves? Seems like...

A big thank you to the devs, just the same

You need to upgrade the rest of your system too, not just pieces.

What is the minimum uboot version required? is there a kwb file of it -or latest - available for the sheevaplug ?

I have this version of uboot

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'U-Boot 1.1.4 (Dec 27 2009 - 22:03:21) Marvell version: 3.4.27')

will this allow the new linux-kirwood package to work on my sheeva?

I guess that means I have to update. Last time I did this I used a .bin file, but now I'm seeing .elf and .kwb all over the subject eg http://people.debian.org/~tbm/u-boot/2012.04.01-2/sheevaplug/. Which one do I use? Also do these u-boot images still have the usb, mmc and other Marvell additions?

I'd suggest seeking out information on Doozan's forum.
