POGO-B01 no longer booting

Postby silverD » Mon Nov 04, 2013 12:12 am

Hello all,
I've done a fair amount of forum reading, but can't get my POGO-B01 back working. This is my first post, so please go easy. :|
Long story short: Purchased the pogoplug some time ago when it was on sale. Promptly loaded archlinux and converted it to a LAMP server via http://lifehacker.com/5637092/turn-a-pogoplug-into-a-fully+featured-linux-web-server All was good...until now.
I'm new to linux and didn't continue to update the device. It wasn't until I recently wanted to update it and try new packages that I had issues. Trying to update pacman or add packages, I'd get the following error messages: no address record. I verified I had the rc.conf network setup correctly as well as my hosts file. In reading this forum, I found that the oxnas was end of life and this was most likely the reason for my issues. I tried to create a new rootfs using this info here: http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=5733&p=32619, but the POGO-B01 will not fully boot. I made sure the dos compatible flag was set when creating the ext3 file system. LED flashes, but then is not solidly lit. I didn't backup my original rootfs from my USB drive. I do not see the pogoplug on the network and have tried both DHCP and static IP. I opened the plug and added an eSATA port and also was able to connect to the serial port. Here is what I get:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', ':: Saving dmesg log [BUSY]

NIT: Entering runlevel: 3 [
mount: mount point /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc does not exist

Re: POGO-B01 no longer booting

Postby Geoff » Mon Nov 04, 2013 12:58 am

Unfortunately, the kernel that is packaged with the SATA "disk_create" script is an old one that is incompatible with the latest rootfs. You need to take and use the appropriate newer kernel (uImage.pci or uImage.nopci) from /boot in the rootfs instead. Most likely, the kernel you have in NAND (for use with rootfs on USB) is also an old kernel, so you may want to replace that also at some point, once you have it booting up OK from SATA.

Thanks for the response Geoff. I have yet to try to boot from SATA. So I need to follow these instructions http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=2146, but substitute the newer "uImage.nopci" kernel from /boot in the rootfs instead?

Yes, that's probably your best option. You will prefer SATA anyway once you start using it, as it's faster and more reliable than USB.

Your other option is more complicated:
$this->bbcode_list('1')
  • Find an old rootfs that's compatible with your old kernel in NAND and boot up with that rootfs on USB.
  • Replace the kernel in NAND with the latest kernel and shutdown.
  • Replace the old rootfs with the new rootfs and boot up with that.

Thanks for the help Geoff. I followed the instructions in the thread and now I'm getting a steady blinking LED. By the way, glombus' instructions on page 37 were a big help, thanks! Still do not see the plug on the network.
Here is the serial output I'm now getting when trying to boot from SATA:

I'm using a Seagate 7200.9, 500GB drive with a 3 GB rootfs partition. The drive is in a Kingwin EZ-dock eSATA/USB2.0 dock. I'll put the 1.5 Gbs/s jumper back in the drive and try again. One thing I find odd is that after I setup the drive and boot it off the pogoplug, I cannot mount the sda2 partition again on my linux machine (WL-500GP v2).

It is not booting off the SATA, and apparently you NAND has problems.

I would suspect the dock, if two different drives didn't work in it. My Seagate 320GB 7200rpm drive works fine.
