log in successful but does not complete

I am not sure what think of this or how to debug the problem. It happened a while back with another user account and to fix it I just deleted the user and added them again. unfortunately this time it is root. I am running arch on my raspberry pi and have been using it as a repo for my personal installs. unfortunately root has been broken and when i log in this is what the screen shows.

I am still able to log in as my other user account just fine but for some reason root just stops there. There is no root@host ~% that pops up and any command I do shows up as text. like i said before i did fix this last time by deleting and adding the user again. But I don not know the consequences of deleting root and would prefer not to find out. Also note before anyone suggests it... yes I did try turning it off and on again. love IT crowd.
