I'm 100% sure this is heat related so it has nothing to do with the board except for bad thermal relieve/dissipation design.
If something is faulty then it's the SoC that overheat (and it's a maybe because this might be acceptable by Allwinner's quality control) and as I stated, with a fan attached the board works and doesn't freeze.
My Cubieboard is in the trash and I wouldn't touch Allwinner based devices again.
I've got a Cubox-i2 running 24/7 for months without an issue and soon an i4 will be added to it so my recommendation is if you need the extra memory and cpu power then get a Cubox-i else get a PogoPlug Series 4 both are quality products and reliable that will work flawlessly.
