Need suggestions on which SOC to get

Postby klundry » Tue Apr 15, 2014 8:50 pm

I'm mainly considering Cubieboard2, Cubietruck, Odroid U3, Radxa Rock and cubox-i4.

My goal is to use one of these boards as a low power server acting as a NAS, sharing files, running plex media server and possibly subsonic. I know none of these boards will be able to transcode plex sufficiently. But will they all do the other tasks well?

Really, I would like to hear people's experiences with the support, stability and ease of installation on any of these boards to help me figure out which will best fit my needs. Thanks.

Radxa has all-but-none for support, in any official sense. The bootloader stack is a mess.

The Cubieboards are decent, and support is good from Arch and linux-sunxi.org

mdrjr works for Hardkernel, developed the U3 kernel, and maintains a high presence in the ALARM community.

The cubox-i4 is an i.MX6Q which is a very capable SoC.

Thanks for the quick rundown. Looks like I'll eliminate the radxa from my list.

Which one will I get the best transfer speeds from? It looks like the 10/100Mb port on the U3 and the Cubieboard2 will be the limiting factor for those models. The Cubietruck and the cubox-i4 have Gigabit ethernet and sata ports, so I'm assuming they will have better speeds? Is there anything that would limit those speeds on any of these boards, similar to the way the Raspberry Pi is limited by the ethernet and usb sharing the same bus?

The Cubietruck still has a usb-attached network, FAIK, so you're still going to be limited to that.

The iMX6 series has a RGMII/PHY interface capable of about 450-500Mbps transfer, plus that SATA is pretty zippy. In reality, you're not going to be maxing either out on a regular basis based on your listed usage.

All of the officially supported platforms will perform perfectly fine for your use.

Ok. I know I won't be maxing them out regularly but I would still like to get the best transfer rates I can for copying files across the network and such.

It sounds like the i.mx6 cubox-i4 is going to be the best in that regard.

WarheadsSE,

Does the Wanboard have the same limitation in Gigabit Ethernet as the Cubox does?

Yes, only utilite (some models) has an Ethernet that is capable, but no sata or usb3

The Utilite has a second NIC that is an Intel GbE adapter over the PCIe x1 slot.

Is it so hard to make a device that has real gig Ethernet and usb3 or sata? Seems like they all have one but not the other.

You realize that many x86 machines "with GbE" don't ever sustain true gigabit throughput as well, right?
