Raspberry Pi Camera fails to start with ENOSPC error

Postby RobMeades » Sat May 17, 2014 3:59 pm

Hi there. I have a recently purchased Raspberry Pi and camera module. I have been bringing it up with ARCH Linux today. When I attempt to run the camera with:

raspistill -o image.jpg

I get the error:

mmal: mmal_vc_component_enable: failed to enable component: ENOSPC
mmal: camera component couldn't be enabled
mmal: main: Failed to create camera component
mmal: Failed to run camera app. Please check for firmware updates

I have seen posts suggesting that on previous occasions this error has been due to a conflict with 1-wire devices but I am not running these. The wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Raspberry_Pi suggests that I need to set:

cma_lwm=
cma_hwm=
cma_offline_start=

...but doesn't suggest how I go about choosing the values. In my vanilla setup I have:

gpu_mem_512=316
gpu_mem_256=128
cma_lwm=16
cma_hwm=32
cma_offline_start=16

...and vcdbg log msg shows:

alloc_compact_internal: retrying allocation of 6426624 bytes (mode 7) - 3 more attempts
cma: - calling vchi_lmk_run
alloc_compact_internal: retrying allocation of 6426624 bytes (mode 7) - 2 more attempts
cma: - calling vchi_lmk_run
alloc_compact_internal: retrying allocation of 6426624 bytes (mode 7) - 1 more attempt
alloc_compact_internal(space=6426624, in_low_region=0, mode=7) failed

Can anyone suggest what values I should set to get the camera working, or otherwise what I might be doing wrong?

S'OK, I had misunderstood the instructions, the intention is to set these exact lines in /boot/config.txt:

cma_lwm=
cma_hwm=
cma_offline_start=

...i.e., there are no values for these parameters. Then it works.

That wiki article was not written by us, and is UNSUPPORTED.

As for why CMA has stopped, see the issue @ github for the foundation.
