Fresh install on Pogo E02 with three drives

Postby jettdigitals » Mon Jul 21, 2014 10:53 pm

Greetings!

I have spent a couple of days reading everything found related to setting up the Pogo E02. Most right here on the forum and a few outside sites. Tons of information:)

What I am looking for is a newbie friendly guide. I am taking the stock Pogo E02 out of box and going to install ARM onto USB 1TB drive.

Have experimented with a pogo mobile device and understand the basics.

Basically going to use as a local server for file storage and PHP / WordPress development.

Will have:

(1) 1 TB USB drive. Like to partition correctly to work with (boot) ARM and other partition(s) readable by Windows machine over network.

(2) 500 GIG USB drive. Mainly to backup files from other Windows (not operating systems) machines on local network.

(3) 500 GIG drive. Pretty much same use as above.

(4) Server with mySQL and phpMyAdmin. Maybe Webmin or something like that?

Really like to do it right first time and would appreciate much help from those who were in my position at one time...

Seems there is information spread all over. But do not find much about using multiple drives and that is a biggie for me.

Used http://obihoernchen.net/wordpress/770/p ... rch_linux/ when testing on pogo mobile BUT had issues with Samba and ended up installing Nginx from here viewtopic.php?f=53&t=5024

Anyone care to help an old man who once had a strong brain but has since turned a little mushy:)

Take a look at my tutorial here - http://blog.qnology.com/2013/03/tutoria ... linux.html

Follow the tutorial as is, using only your 1TB drive.

The only slightly tricky thing would be to make sure that the Pogoplug boot up consistently to your 1TB drive and not to your two 500GB USB drives. This problem should be solvable using the following solution - http://mhassan.me/2012/06/27/booting-po ... -usb-disk/

Thank you grayman4hire! I appreciate your input much.

BTW: Love your in-depth tutorials. They are clear and easy to follow.

I will go over the info you suggest.

Did see a post about uboot and hoping it might help with the multiple drive boot issues:

If anyone has tired this and has suggestions by all means share:)

The new uBoot isn't going to "solve" the multiple drive issue. It really comes down to configuring the uBoot env variable and booting to labeled rootfs (as instructed in the link I provided).

Thanks once again @grayman4hire.

That is why an ole newbie like myself appreciates help from folks like yourself:)

Fixing to give it a go and see what happens. Tired of using an old desktop (running linux mint), listening to the fans and have it heating up my area. Time to hack a pogo!

I got to the "reboot" step. Had to use "busybox reboot" and box rebooted.

Reading:

"SSH back into your Pogoplug and login with the username and password of root/root. Success? Congratulations! At this point, Arch Linux is now running on your Pogoplug."

root/root will not work, access denied. Tired root/ceadmin and got in?

Once logged in there is no "alarm" by prompt, it reads: Pogoplug:~$

Am I still on the right track here? Reread the steps and does not appear I skipped anything but my ole eyes are not what they use to be.

You're still booting up into the default Pogoplug OS.

Did you successfully partition, format, download and extract the ArchLinuxARM-kirkwood-latest.tar.gz to your USB hard drive?

Everything went fine without any errors. Yes to all your questions.

I even started over and setup with 3 partitions to see what would happen. Same exact results. Very strange.

Tried two different USB drives. One I know is fine, used it to play around with the pogo mobile.

Not sure it will tell you anything (greek to me):

UPDATE: After having a cup of very strong coffee decided to take a drive to local computer house and buy brand new 1TB drive for my USB enclosure.

Started fresh with tutorial http://blog.qnology.com/2013/03/tutoria ... linux.html

Worked!

Why? Not a clue. Both of my other USB drives I tried are working? One of them I had used when learning a bit about ARM on my old pogo mobile device. Beats me.

Bottom line there is not a single thing wrong with the tutorial above, it was my hardware.

Now logged in and have the root@alarm prompt.

Time to move forward with your excellent tutorial. Hope the rest goes smooth:)

Thank you for helping.
