... can still find the boot and root partitions (as long as they're in the 1st 2TB of the disk). Yes, and hybrids work. We tested 3.1 with root=PARTUUID=xxxxxxx

I booted a oxnas from an SSD SATA drive with hybrid so that I could test PARTUUID rootfs decisions.

See the `PARTUUID=00000000-01`? That's the problem.

I ran into a similar problem and thanks to your findings so far I was able to come up with a solution. Apparently what blkid reports for MBR PTs as PARTUUID (which - as far as I understand it - only really exists in GPTs) is the concatenation of what fdisk calls the "Disk identifier", ...

... without an initramfs even with this disc identifier. At some point in the initramfs there's probably a search for the boot device by comparing the PARTUUID of blkid with the root variable passed by u-boot which fails because blkid doesn't report a PARTUUID for this device's partitions at all.
