[BBBW] With latest kernel wifi stops working

Postby coroner21 » Tue Aug 20, 2019 8:00 pm

Hi all,

Since it is mentioned to report bugs in the "Packages" section, I just repeat here what was already posted in the TI device section (https://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=13846):

With the latest kernel package for beaglebone devices (linux-am33x) since the 5.2 version the wifi stopped working. The strange thing is that the modules wlcore, wl18xx won't even load and loading them manually also does not bring up the device (no messages are even produced when loading these modules). It works just fine with the 5.1 version.

Let me know if I can help to debug this, I already tried simply replacing the dtb file with the previous version to see whether this is simply a device tree issue, however without success. Also been poking into recent mainline kernel commits however I could not spot any obvious commits that might be related to this issue.

Any help would be highly appreciated, currently it seems for BBBW devices we are stuck with an outdated kernel package if the wifi is needed.

I think it is not related only to a particular SBC, even my Asus TB S, getting such flaw. It starts for a while and then it fails.

I think this is probably a different problem since for BBBW the wifi device is simply not existing anymore with 5.2 linux version.

I now tried several things without luck:
- using device tree file of previously working kernel version
- re-compiling the kernel with a config directly derived from previously working version and only adjusting newly added config options
- removal of the RCN patches

Any pointers from the developers how to tackle this?

Fortunately this seems to be solved at least since linux-am33x version 5.3.1
