$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('wfr', 'I')'ve re-installed aarch64. The new installation uses USB-boot mode - no problems with firefox. By the way the new installation has no file /boot/cmdline.txt.

You are not running linux-rpi if you are using the default image, you are running linux-aarch64. See my advice above:
