Now that I think of it, I had problem to boot on that rpi3b (the one with /boot on usb HDD).

A reboot would most of the time failed. With some corruption on the FS. So I thought it was another problem.
But some boot, it was simply the HDD that was not found. What is weird is that some boot were fine. and for some other, the disk was not found

Mainly cold boot, the hdd was seen.

So the boot on usb hdd was borked for some time.

honestly my wifi is off and i have not tested it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('blablubb1234', '

Are you able to recover with your desktop x86 machine using this: https://www.ganymede.ch/2020/03/18/arch ... wngrading/ ?
you should easily downgrade your kernel with your cache.

edit: of course booting with a standard USB arch live

No, I'm not able to do that and honestly I'm wondering how you all recovered from this situation. I do not have access to a unning Arch system right now.

So I can't use qemu-user-static to chroot into the Pi's OS (in a live arch system, I can't seem to use makepkg to install the needed package from AUR).

Which other options do I have? I heard there's a way to force executiion of scripts by placing a certain config file on the sd card, but I couldn't find any guide on it. Is there a chance to boot from a live archiso from a pen drive instead of the sd card? If so, any hint on how to prepare the pen drive using Windows 10?

If you have another sd card prepare it with a fresh installation (as per instructions here) and then fire up your pi with that and mount the non-working sd-card of your system (use a usb-card-reader). Then you can just chroot into your old system without any emulation (aka qemu) needed.

Generally I would recommend to think about a strategy for the worst case and prepare everything.
There are different options available and you can choose as per your liking. Just some ideas:
- daily script to create an image of your system every day (this can be flashed then and you can recover to the day before)
- keep a backup system for recovery available (just swap the sd card)
- get a working system on your pc ready (WSL makes it much easier nowadays).
