[chromium] latest Chromium packages crashes a lot

Postby Whistler » Mon Dec 05, 2016 4:32 am

Hi,

I did a pacman -Syu today, however the latest chromium package (55.0.2883.75-1) crashes 100% on many sites (such as http://slashdot.org/ ).

It works well before updating.

Is there anything I can do to fix this (e.g, download & install the old chrome 54 package)?

Hardware: Asus Chromebook C201

Thanks in advance

I noticed this also with 55. Not sure how to debug these Aw, Snap errors.

Same here.

I've downgraded for now, until it's fixed.

This fixed the problem. Thank you very much.

Someone needs to look into 55. I was not even able to signin to my Google account in Chromium.

Version 55.0.2883.87 continues to have this issue. When I downgraded to 54.0.2840.901, I experience errors with amazon and other secure sites, but I did not experience any Aw Snap errors.

When you start it from the command line, you see the problem:
Code: Select all
Received signal 7 BUS_ADRALN

Something with invalid address alignment. The stacktrace is useless. But it's probably some compiler problem... again...

where's the right place to report this, and does anyone know if that's been done?

I emailed the address associated with the signature of the package, but I'm not sure if that's the proper thing to do.

I've found a workaround in the meantime.

53 and 54 have the certificate transparency problem, and 55 on arch Linux ARM has this memory alignment problem.

To get a working chromium (for all sites), install any version pre-55.x of chromium, old packages can be retrieved from http://tardis.tiny-vps.com/aarm/packages/c/chromium/ . I grabbed chromium-54.0.2840.90-1-armv7h.pkg.tar.xz

Then upgrade to that version:
Code: Select all
sudo pacman -U chromium-54.0.2840.90-1-armv7h.pkg.tar.xz

Then start chromium with the following arguments from command line:
Code: Select all
chromium --variations-server-url=https://clients4.google.com/chrome-variations/seed --fake-variations-channel=stable

which was provided from this thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12953172

This enables "Finch", a method of getting flags from google at application startup to dynamically config the browser. This is enabled in google chrome by default and disabled in chromium by default.

You can edit your GUI application launcher for chromium to include these arguments on every launch until a fix is available for 55.

Note that this has some privacy concerns that are mentioned in the thread, i.e. notifying google every time you launch the browser and allowing them to dynamically configure your browser on start, but this is no worse than running google chrome.
