[linux-raspberrypi] 4.9.11-1 kernel panic on rpi 1,2,3

Postby jskier » Wed Feb 22, 2017 6:24 pm

With the latest update to the linux-raspberrypi kernel page, I have a rpi 2 and 3 that won't boot. This can be pinned to the 4.9.11 release, as rolling back to the latest image boot partition will yield a successful boot. This is a rather serious bug, as it makes rpi devices fail to complete boot up after they are updated to the latest kernel.

Panic message:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'PANIC: stack-protector: Kernel stack is corrupted in: 7f13b2a0')

Drops to kdb after this.

Original forum post with others having this problem is here:

Happy to help troubleshoot and provide more information if needed.

Do you have any unusual hardware hooked-up to the box? I have successfully updated three RPi2 and two RPi3 systems to the 4.9.11-1 release without issue :/

I removed the camera off the rpi2, and the problem persisted. Haven't tried that on rpi 3 yet. Neither device uses gpio at the moment or any other USB devices for that matter. Reverting back to 4.4.49-1 fixes the problem on both.

There appears to be a growing number of people on the other thread with this issue. I'm holding off upgrading an rpi 1 as it's in a remote location and I don't want to lock it up, however another user reported their rpi 1 is not booting after the update.

Interesting you're not having these problems. Maybe we're missing something on the upgrade with config files? I merged the pacnew changes and that also had no effect.

The only other thing I can think of is, I compiled in xtables and use dkms. Just removed and cleaned those up, and the error still persists.

EDIT: I'll try the latest image and upgrade later on on the rpi2.

In my rpi3, as well in rpi2, kernel panics, only monitor was connected through HDMI during boot. Most probably I have used rpi camera module in this rpi3 earlier. It didn't drop to kdb as in rpi2, but showed trace. I don't have serial console connected, but I attach image of the screen here.

Blacklisting bcm2835_v4l2 kernel module fixed the problem for me

Thanks urquan, I had file in /etc/modules-load.d to explicitly load bcm2835_v4l2, so just removing the file prevented the panic.

On the rpi2 and 3 and removing the camera module also worked for me. So, the v4l driver is the problem. When I load it in the latest kernel manually, it panics again. So, no camera with the latest kernel.

Where should this bug report go now? Upstream?

Looking through the back issues on their tracker and searching v4l2, it seems this has happened in the past, and they actually still have one of them open

Has anyone tried kernel version 4.9.12-1 with bcm2835_v4l2?

Module isn't found when I try to load it now in the latest kernel.
