[nfs-utils] Stale File Handle

Postby kriztioan » Thu Jun 20, 2019 1:44 am

With the recent update of nfs-utils from version 2.3.4-1 to 2.4.1-1 on my NAS I have been unable to connect to any of its shares over NFS. I am unaware of version 2.4.1-1 requiring additional nfsd configuration options to be set. Manually trying to mount (mount -t nfs server:path path) a share on the NAS from an Ubuntu-system results in the message "Stale File Handle". Checking the NAS's journal does show a "authenticated mount request from ... for ..."-message from rpc.mountd. Downgrading to version 2.3.4-1 resolves all issues.

On the server side (Arch Linux) :
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
nfs-utils 2.4.1-1
')
Client side (Gentoo Linux):
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
net-fs/nfs-utils-2.3.3
')
Everything was OK before today :evil:

Downgrading package did the trick.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/nfs-utils-2.3.4-1-armv7h.pkg.tar.xz
')

Same problem here with 2.4.1-1, downgrading to 2.3.4-1 made nfs mount working again.

Same issue on two RPi 2's. The startup log may provide a clue:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '

Jun 25 10:56:38 gomorrah systemd[1]: Started Notify NFS peers of a restart.
')

The rpc.statd, rpc.mountd and sm-notify services are reporting version 2.3.4, despite being provided by nfs-utils 2.4.1. The files in /usr/bin are definitely not the same as those supplied by nfs-utils 2.3.4. Maybe a build problem?

[edit 2019-07-13] I set my desktop (Fedora 30, x86_64) up as an nfs server and everything works smoothly. nfs-utils on Fedora 30 (x86_64) was upgraded to 2.4.1.0 a week or so ago. So, evidence that the x86_64 builds don't have the same issue. (No suprise therre.)

Same issue with odroid-HC1. Downgrade to 2.3.4-1 makes it work again.

@davep: Build problem: That would explain why the issue doesn't seem widely reported (or reported at all) in the x86 world.

Hi there,

I'm glad to read that someone else has encountered the same issue. :? I'm running an Odroid XU4 (armv7h) and have the same problems and after downgrading everything works again.

Same issue here. Obviously the latest (packman -Syu earlier today). Pulled out my cables, ran fsck, xfs_repair and pulled the sd card out to fsck it as well... Spun my wheels for around 4 hours trying to fix.

So, A big Thanks! for posting this and thanks to the spiders for finally finding it finally in my search. Never occurred to me my Odroid would be the source of the actual issue nor that I would find an answer on the forum.

I performed the downgrade, restarted the nfs-server process and bam! I can get to my server again.

It was extremely frustrating as I was trying to move my kodi database to my Odroid, which also houses my nfs server. Why use another big, honking PC when Arch ARM will do the trick quite nicely. I thought I had broken my server with the install of mariadb, but that didn't really make any sense at all.

BTW... you guys/gals of Developers are the best bunch to have. Same for the Arch Linux x86_64 side of things too.
Love this distro!
