Linux kernel again much behind mainline Arch packages.

Hi! Sorry to always be the one to complain.

The Linux kernel on Arch ARM is at 5.8.9-2, while the mainline Arch kernel is at 5.9.3.arch1-1. The ARM kernel release candidate is 5.9.rc4-1, but kernel.org has their release candidate at 5.10-rc2.

I do understand that it's gotten complicated, as starting somewhere around 5.8, the generic kernel had grown so large it could no longer be used directly for the Chromebook builds. There's been some discussion about that here: https://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=14763.

Thanks in advance for taking a look.

It's in the works by Kevin. For now, you are welcome to try latest 5.9.3 from my PKGBUILD or download directly from http://repo-ck.com/aarch64-test/ .. note that I am not planning to host versions moving forward, just for this particular release.

I have not tested on chromebook so you can report back here if you wish.

OK, thanks.

I am running 5.9.3 with my own '.config', limiting it to just Rockchip platforms. I see that 5.9.6 was released this afternoon, so I'll be building that overnight (even on a 2 GHz processor, it takes more than 4 hrs to build a new kernel).

You need to build with distcc. A single x86_64 volunteer cut your compilation time by 2 or 3x. See instruction on the arch wiki. For some data comparing compiling alone or with a x86_64 box with distccd, see: https://github.com/graysky2/distccd-alarm

Switching the `linux-aarch64-rc` PKGBUILD to point to 5.9.8 works fine. There are two new config items to set, but other than that it builds and runs fine (https://repo.m2x.dev/current/odroid/aarch64/).
