Re: are all webkit based browsers broken?

Postby keithspg » Tue Mar 09, 2021 2:28 am

Arrrrgh. I had a ton typed in and it lost it.

Summary: Openbox same thing. I launch any browser other than Chromium and I get nothing but a white page (Epiphany, luakit, surf, surfer). I remove all config files and pare down xinitrc to nothing and same thing.

This is testing on aarch64 w/rpi4 kernel. I will duplicate it on armv7 and see how it goes.

the xorg log shows this:

Re: are all webkit based browsers broken?

Postby robg » Tue Mar 09, 2021 1:05 pm

The logout timeout is b**ch.

Your situation is very odd. I am running linux-raspberrypi4 5.10.20-1 on a RPI 4B 8G, with linux-firmware 20201218.646f159-1, firmware-raspberrypi 20210224-1, raspberrypi-bootloader 20210305-1, raspberrypi-bootloader-x 20210305-1, xf86-video-fbdev 0.5.0-2, and xorg-server 1.20.10-3 (incl. its dependencies). Running `startx` with "exec openbox-session" in .xinitrc gives me a working X session, where chromium and epiphany work flawlessly.

Edit:

rob,

I have a differnet firmware
yours: linux-firmware 20201218.646f159-1
mine: linux-firmware 20210208.b79d239-1

I can try that. I will duplicate your cmdline and config and see what happens. Then try reverting to that firmware.

I see you are running a 4B whereas I am running a 3B+. I will try this image on my 4B and see what happens. Before I do, I will see if I can revert the firmware... but that is another post, maybe tonight.

on my 3B+ and your config and cmdline, I get the same thing. Whether I run vc4-kms-v3d or vc4-fkms-v3d I get the same error in the journal and the white page in luakit:

Mar 09 08:15:02 rune64 xinit[1668]: libEGL warning: DRI2: failed to authenticate
Mar 09 08:15:03 rune64 xinit[1668]: Could not create EGL sharing context.
Mar 09 08:15:03 rune64 xinit[1668]: Could not create EGL context.[/code]

This is the startup with 'fkms' - it is different and looks like dri is detected differently.

My X startup is different with vc4-fkms-v3d, though:

Re: are all webkit based browsers broken?

Postby keithspg » Wed Mar 10, 2021 1:34 am

just tried it on my 4b and it is the same.
Tried downgrading the firmware, it is the same.

by 'same' I mean that I get the "Could not create EGL" and then the display stops and all I get is a white screen. Also with Xorg, I get a ton of the "(EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPUTCMAP: Invalid argument" same on both machines.

Something is off, somehow. I will build a fresh image and install just a bare system to see if I can make it work with just a bare sys and openbox.

are you running the rasberrypi4 kernel?

Your X log shows errors pertaining to fbdev, whereas mine does not. It's odd that you also encounter this problem on a RPI 4B. I am indeed running the linux-raspberrypi4 kernel (which, I believe, should also work on the RPI 3B+). My install procedure was as follows:

  • Follow the aarch64 installation instructions here.
  • Install raspberrypi-bootloader and raspberrypi-bootloader-x.
  • Run `sed -i 's/mmcblk1/mmcblk0/g' root/etc/fstab`
Can you check whether this setup works for you with a different display?

Note that I have put updates to the linux-firmeware package on hold until this issue is resolved upstream.

Well, I created a fresh image and updated everything. I did notice with the old firmware (from 20201218) that the wlan does not work. It does with the upgraded firmware.

With this new image, I then installed openbox and luakit as well as other browsers and all of them work as expected. I them created a package list and tried to compare it to my other image and nothing was different. Basically running pacman -Qqetn to create a package list then feeding that back into pacman on my other image and nothing was installed. So now I am stumped. I see no other option than to take this new image (that works) and start adding my packages one by one until it breaks.

If I figure out what is causing this, I will post here.

One of these packages or a dependency causes it to display a white page. This is a collection from my .bash_history for root. I made a new image and installed these packages and it ceased displaying... No other modifications to the base aarch image other than I allow root login and install linux-raspberrypi4. I'll remove them one by one from the end and see when it starts working again. I tried 'pacman -Rcsn' of the last line and still no joy. I'll keep at it and see what transpires.

Re: are all webkit based browsers broken?

Well, after removing programs, I could not get it work again. So I started over. And this time I installed a few packages right after I got it going, but nothing that I thought would mess with X and I have the same result as before. I'll start over...

So, I think I may have figured it out. I have not posted solved, yet as I want to check more installs.

It seem that in order to actually make this work, you need to have more than 16mb of memory allocated in the config file.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '# kms
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3

# video memory
gpu_mem=64')

I noted that this works with or without "vc4-kms-v3" set but with 16 for gpu_mem, it fails every time.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '# kms

I noted that this works with or without "vc4-kms-v3d" set but with 16 for gpu_mem, it fails every time.

this is a memory allocation bug. I have no idea why firefox and chromium do not do this, but the others I listed above do. What happens is you get the egl error in the log and a white field where the browser is supposed to be. There is stuff there as you can select it and click (blindly) but no graphics shows. Once this is done, everything works as expected.

There is an Xorg/X11 issue, that may be related as this only happens under X and not Weston/Wayland. Still, the output always directs to the HDMI (/dev/fb0) regardless of where I tell the fbdev driver to point to. I have a display on /dev/fb1 and the video always goes to /dev/fb0 in xorg. Weston with the fbdev backend will actually draw on whichever screen it is launched from...
