xorg not starting on armv7l

Postby unformatted » Wed Apr 14, 2021 1:01 pm

I'm on RPi4 armv7l and just did a full update (pacman -Syu). Now xorg is not starting anymore. I see that xorg-server package updated yesterday. Just a couple of hours before that I also updated and everything was fine. Luckily I made a backup just before updating today. I've restored the backup because I need to work on this Pi so unfortunately I'm not able to provide more details. I justed wanted to report there's an issue with yesterday's xorg-server update on armv7l.

It seems I didn't update config.txt to use kms. My bad. It seems that the latest xorg only works when kms is enabled in config.txt.

Postby gdr01 » Sun Apr 18, 2021 12:08 pm

After update my 2 rpi 4's I can no longer startx.
RasbianOS works fine so hardware is good.
It appears it can no longer find the video driver.

The same thing just happened to me.
I updated my Raspberry Pi 400 a few days ago before shutting it down.
I turned it on today and and cant run X. According to the log it can't find a video driver.
Honestly, it's been so long since I set this machine up I don't remember what driver it used.
Tried to update again, also tried reinstalling Xorg packages. No joy...

update config.txt to use kms - no difference

Info I have gathered implies the relevant drivers are not in the correct place.

Its to do with kernel 5.10.27-4 as 5.10.27.1 is working

The only differences between 5.10.27-4 and 5.10.27-1 lie with upstream. No config changes were made. Are you saying that if you downgrade only the kernel package, and reboot, everything works as expected?

Regarding the modprobe lines... fbdev is a driver provided by xf86-video-fbdev so modprobe should not try loading it at all.

Code: Select all
% pkgfile -r 'fbdev.*so'
extra/gst-plugins-bad-libs
extra/xf86-video-fbdev
extra/xorg-server

I'm up and running again for now.

Because it was mentioned I downgraded the kernel first just to rule it out. It didn't change anything,
but I didn't really expect it too so I put it back.

According to the log my last -Syu upgraded the following Xorg stuff:

xorg-server-common (1.20.10-3 -> 1.20.11-1)
xorg-server (1.20.10-3 -> 1.20.11-1)
xorg-server-devel (1.20.10-3 -> 1.20.11-1)
xorg-server-xephyr (1.20.10-3 -> 1.20.11-1)
xorg-server-xnest (1.20.10-3 -> 1.20.11-1)
xorg-server-xvfb (1.20.10-3 -> 1.20.11-1)
xorg-xwayland (21.1.0-1 -> 21.1.1-1)

I downgraded them all from pacman's cache and it did the trick. After work I'll try upgrading them
one by one starting with the ones I don't suspect to isolate the culprit.
