[Transmission] Why always gets low seeders

Postby dinjo » Thu Nov 01, 2012 4:41 pm

I always wondered why transmission always gets low seeders I tested this and verified with Transmission i was getting 2 seeders on a torrent but when the same file i try to download in windows utorrent i see 4 seeders and faster download speed is it because pogo is a headless system not all seeders are seen also i always get better speed on windows than on transmission and i think this is probably due to memory

memory, UDP settings, lord knows.

Dig in, find facts, move past speculation, and we'll see what we can do.

Would adding a swap help ? has anyone tried it ? I dont know the internals of transmission so can't post any facts but I'm sure people would have definitely looked at this and will post there views

By any chance did you do that windows test while the plug transmission was running too? It may have taken your plug as another seeder, too. Check to make sure you are using an open port for transmission and that nothing in your firewall or router settings are limiting your plug. On any machine in my house I hit the max U/D rate my ISP transfer for the service I pay for, headless or not. Make sure to enable uTP support as that tends to help speed (so I've heard).

It wouldn't hurt to add a swap either way unless you are using a flash drive (NEVER swapon a flash drive).

Yes ports are opened and Utp is enabled problem is it cannot find all the seeders which utorrent or any other windows client get

All with hard drive and swap on dockstars --
I have downloaded 3 raspberrypi torrents at he same time, each picked up 20 seeders.
My son regularly has 80 torrents seeding
So no problems

Before transmission 2.71 I was getting very low speeds as well. They fixed utp transfer speeds. Now I download well seeded torrents at 2.4 MBytes/s. There are a couple of other things you can try. Force encryption on in case your ISP throttles bittorent, use hardware cryptography as described here: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=2452
Increase the maximum amount of peers: I use 200 per torrent and 1000 overall. You already have the ports (udp and tcp) open, so that's good.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('dinjo', 'I')t cannot find all the seeders which utorrent or any other windows client get
Another issue I found via htop is high Plug CPU load and heat up mostly due to ongoing writes of torrent packets to disk. Since many folks use lengthy torrent lists and download several at once, I felt it may affect Plug service life. Consider adding Plug cooling or use a PC for lengthy torrent downloads. I hooked a USB HD to a USB Sharing Switch In port, and PC and Plug to its Out ports, and run Utorrent on the PC. :)

Would hardware cryptography help improve performance ? I already have encryption enabled and cpu load is quite low not sure whats the problem so its not a matter of increasing no of seeders since the torrent only has 20 seeders but with seedboxes but transmission does not get all of them.

I also get more than 60+ seeders but not the speed which i get in IDM in Windows

What is the port you have assigned for transmission? Is it 688x? If so, most ISP throttle the port as well, if not your ISP, maybe the peer's ISP will. Use something in range 50000 to 68000. For encryption, set it to "Require encryption". I also set my max upload rate to 250 out of 350 possible to give it some room for overhead.
