Cubitruck - rollback to sunxi ??

Postby soundcheck » Fri Aug 28, 2015 7:38 am

Hi.

The Mainline kernel for the Cubitruck lacks core functionality such as DMA support asf.
Basically the port is all but accomplished and won't be accomplished - from what I hear - before 4.3 as it seems.

From that perspective it should be considered to roll back to the sunxi kernels as default for the Cubitruck.
That probably applies to other Cubieboards as well.

Mainline should then be marked experimental at this stage!

The method of how to switch mainline <> sunxi should be explained and outlined.

Please let me know, if I'm wrong with this!

Wasn't the latest sunxi kernel version 3.4? 3.4 doesn't have in-kernel firmware loader required by systemd. You are welcome to backport it to 3.4 though so the kernel can be readded to the repos.

Latest kernel I've seen for the CT is a 3.4.108

On this site you'll find:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')o audio driver, IR, NAND, BT, HW video, SPI untested on 4.0 or higher

ARCH probably need to backport to uImage+script.bin+uEnv.txt vs. zImage+.dtb/.dts+boot.scr

Unfortunately I'm not able to prepare and maintain packages.

Still I'm wondering what's behind supplying kernels with limited core functionalities on
the main ARCH ARM branch.
Being bleeding edge is one thing. Shouldn't be support of given board-functionality PRIO 1 instead.
Differentiation between stabil and experimental would be nice.

Thx for all your efforts.

Because, maintaining that with multiple kernels in sun{4,5,7,8}i and all the patching that was needed but still slightly non-functional systemd was more of a headache than users complaining about not having ancient kernels.

Most of those are still 3.4. We're on 4.1+ (~3.21) & counting.

- Fewer kernels to patch like a mad man (against The Arch Way)
- Simpler to retrieve sources (for The Arch Way)
- Less overheard for a very small team. (Lowered Excedrin budget)
