No kernel update from Sep. 9th

Postby JOJE » Mon Dec 19, 2022 5:51 pm

Hi there,
There is no new linux-aarch64 after 9th of September and latest available version is 5.19.8. Will there be 6.1 available or this project is halted ?

You likely have an out-of-date mirror. 5.15.83-2 is current. If you want to try the kernels based on rpi-6.1.y, see viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16144

Thx for the answer. I’m using armv8 generic which comes with this kernel : https://archlinuxarm.org/packages/aarch64/linux-aarch64

The other one u mentioned belongs to raspberry “linux-rpi”

I have two odroids, XU4 and N2 and 5.19.8 is the latest on both, linux-aarch64 on the N2 with Sep 9 date also.

And btw, 5.19.8 > 5.15.83, right?

Sorry, misread... linux-aarch64 is indeed at 5.19.8. I was referring to linux-rpi. Not sure why linux-aarch64 hasn't been updated.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('CounterPillow', 'b')ecause this is a dead distro

No, it isn't. Feel free to use another that is more to your liking.

I'm also curious to understand why we're stuck with a kernel that is neither LTS nor anything remotely recent.

I really mean that in a non-insulting way, I'd like to understand if it's a resource problem or if there are compatibility issues with exotic platforms that hold back the release of newer versions. Also I'd love to learn more about the internal ALARM processes involved to maintain those core packages.

Maybe I'll drop the maintainer of linux-aarch64 a mail and ask politely if there is something one could help with. In the meantime I'll try to come up with a PKGBUILD for an LTS kernel.

So here's a branch of mine that features the latest LTS kernel, v5.15.89 (forked off v5.15.13-1):

https://github.com/lynix/alarm-pkgbuilds/tree/linux-aarch64-lts/core

Took 5 hours to build natively on an Odroid C4. No issues so far.

Seen relatively to the latest repository version (5.19.8) this is partly a downgrade but also partly an upgrade as the 5.15 branch is actively maintained and is not affected by the CVEs that the repo version is. But given the version is lower I will not submit a pull request.

Maybe I could forge this into a new 'linux-aarch64-lts' package, similar to 'linux-lts' in Arch? BTW, thanks @graysky for your work with 'linux-aarch64-rc', I'll give that a test run on a Pi as well but on the Odroid I prefer LTS kernels.
