Arch stuck at Linux kernel 6.2.10

Postby Maarten » Wed Aug 02, 2023 7:27 am

Hey all,

Just like we had beginning of this year, it seems linux-aarch64 is stuck at 6.2.10 for ~4 months now. I know it was quite a loaded topic last time (https://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=16280), but I'm trying to understand what's happening here. I've tried searching the Github repo, this forum and Google for a bit more info on why this package version seems so sensitive.

Personally for me it's a bit of a security thing to stick to an unsupported kernel version.

I guess my main question is there anything I or maybe someone else can do to update the kernel version?

Of course I would be happy to contribute to updating the kernel version to a more recent one, but right now it feels a bit of a waste of time to create a PR.

Thanks,
Maarten

It looks like the lts is still maintained, I know this wasn't what you were asking for but it's useful from a security perspective.

Regarding your actual question - no idea. I don't understand the lack of communication as there have been plenty of people willing to help out if we could only identify the issue(s). What the point of a rolling release distro that has stopped rolling?

Hi Murple,

Ah yeah, but that repo is only available via AUR. I rather have an official supported generic AARCH64 Linux kernel, not one via AUR.

Thanks,
Maarten

I have to assume that running arch arm on anything other than an rpi is largely unsupported at this point.

Back in Feb 2023 I ran a body count:

The "last post" was true back in Feb, now the only important "last posts" are the ones that indicate developers who stopped publicly posting. Four of them still log in, two probably are read-only or just PM each other, if anything: kmihelich, graysky, moonman and pepedog.

The list of people with github commit access: github (dot) com/orgs/archlinuxarm/people

It's hard to run a distro with only three people although I'm impressed with how much Kevin puts into it.

I understand that there are problems with the update which are being worked though.

Archboot uses a later kernel. Any reason why official repos can't use this same kernel? Not a rhetorical question, I'm genuinely just curious, and wondering how Archboot deals with the official repos not being quite up-to-date.
