installing on cheap ARM netbook

Postby olive » Fri Dec 16, 2011 6:12 am

Some sites sell very cheap netbook (like this one:

Has anyone experience installing archlinux on these? Is there a guide to do it? I might consider buying one if there is a chance of installing linux on it.

I'm not familiar with its processor, nor can I find any kind of detailed specs. The Efika MX Smartbook is only $199 and actually has quite a few people working on it across a few distributions. We are advancing our support for it when people show up with one (none of our developers have one to work on personally).

This little Laptop ( I mean the EFIKA MX) is made by the reference Design by pegatron for Cortex A8 Netbooks. It has an Freescale i.mx515 Prozessor with an neon compatible graphics engine VR Chip I-dont know the core name. I have another Netbook with nearly the same hardware basics. The herculess eCAFE EX HD from Guillemot has nearly the same Hardware. ( Its more like the MX Nettop because it has an HDMI Out).
The eCAFE is given with an UBUNTU ARM Linux 10.4 LTS. This is something old so I Think I will Port an Arch Linux to it. My Problem to Port new Programs to the UBUNTU is that the ARM Sources don't complete on the server.

PS Sorry for my bad english its not my mothertounge.

I installed it on a 7in ARM netbook. See my posting of 8/22/11 in here describing how I did it.

The 10in 8560 is a little different but my guess is that it is doable assuming that you have some Linux knowledge & skills. Tracking down a working kernel source (it wasn't in the kernel.org tree at that time) for it was the most difficult part.

A 300Mhz ARM netbook is frustratingly slow. There are ARM boards with faster CPUs and more RAM available for around the price of the cheap netbooks....
