ASUS Eee Pad TF201

Install Arch Linux ARM on other devices.

ASUS Eee Pad TF201

Postby HalosGhost » Fri Jun 29, 2012 8:51 pm

Hey all. I've been a user of Archlinux for a little while now, and the more I use Android, the more I realize how limited of an operating system it is. I know ArchlinuxARM supports some Tegra platforms, but I've been led to believe they are primarily Tegra2 devices. I was wondering, has anyone done any work on porting or getting it working on a Tegra3 device (specifically the ASUS Transformer Prime TF201)?

I would absolutely love to have my favorite OS on my slate, so if anyone has any experience in this area, or any direction to point me in, I would be extremely interested. Keep me posted.

All the best,

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('crimsonredmk', 'I')'m always curious about Arch Linux ARM on tablets - is there a GUI for it that doesn't suck? I got it on an HP TouchPad tablet a while ago but there really was no nice GUI for it...

Personally, with a few extensions, I have a feeling Gnome Shell would actually be very friendly on a touch-screen (primarily if it ran in full mode, not fallback mode; which should be the case). Plus, as it's all written in JS and CSS, it doesn't take very much work to make the panels thicker and buttons wider so they are more touch-friendly. That is, however, just my opinion.

Again, I'd be extremely interested in managing this. There's also been a breakthrough in booting fully fledged GNU/Linux OSs on the Prime fairly recently. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603921 for an example. However, that's Ubuntu, something I'd really rather not use.

All the best,

Just to clarify, I know that there are tutorials galore for chrooting, but I'm looking to have a native install. End goal being a flashable zip that would work as if it were a standard Android custom ROM.

I want to avoid chrooting and VNCs whenever possible, native or bust! Any and all help, as always, is much appreciated.

All the best,

Hi, new user here, but long time lurker on arch forums.

Well, I got myself a tf201 this year, and saw no reason to unlock until nvflash (androidroot.mobi) was released a few days ago.
Rolled in androidwook 2.1, but it's still android; running linux natively pushed me again on the www to search about it; as you say, android is cool, but limited; There's no other operating system I'd like to have on it more than leenucks.
It seems there has been progress on fedora as well, which I tend to prefer over ubuntu. (edit: nvm, it's through vnc, forget it)
With a custom bootloader/modified fastboot, we can now flash raw image files, no need for blobs anymore, nvflash allows for repartitioning the nand, flash bootloaders. Who knows, maybe even a dualboot will be achieved! ;)
I'll post more findings as I go around.

Yes, I've been following the release of wheelie from androidroot.mobi to allow nvflash on the TF201. Unfortunately, I managed to mess up the setup, so I'll need to RMA my Prime to get it fixed. But, once it gets fixed and I get nvflash setup, It's impossible to brick again (the massive advantage it provides). And, after that point, it does make it easier to install native GNU/Linux distros (if only because it makes it much safer to test software without fear of bricking).

It also allows us to flash pure images rather than blobs as you said, so things will likely get better (though I still have yet to find anything substantative about Arch Linux being ported).

Keep me posted, and, as always, all the best,
