1) I have no controller over the stock firmware, so IDK what that sqlite complaint is from, or what cdsdaemon is.
2) `cat /proc/partitions` will tell you more than ls /dev/sda*
3) gpio is @ /sys/class/gpio
4) my power resume script does not touch the drive power lines.

Ok, sorry for my ignorance, these types of problems are very new and unfamiliar to me (debugging through a serial console, gpio, harddrives not showing up under /dev/sda etc. Well, embedded linux in general..). Do you think you could elaborate on how I could check if the power line has been enabled? Is there some switch on the mother board, or can it be done through the console?

If the stock firmware can see the drives, then they are enabled at least as part of it's boot process. Check the output as I said.

Remember that embedded isn't all that different from linux in general, just more constrained for space & "powah"

Ok, finally solved the problem of HD and USB not being detected by the NAS320: once I disconnected the power from my serial cable, the firmware was able to boot from both USB and SATA (someone mentioned trying without the power somewhere, should have tried that earlier on). Anyway, now I have another problem: when I try to start up the device _without_ the power cord or the rest of the serial cable (RX, TX, GND), the lights just briefly flash and then turn off. However, if I plug in the power serial and then take it out, I can start the device just fine. So now I'm stuck with having to keep the serial cable plugged in, just in case I need to power down the server.

This weird behaviour started not too long ago, so I'm really hoping I haven't damaged any internals during my debugging sessions. Oh, I'm using davygravy's uboot since a few days ago, and to the best of my knowledge the power problem started only a few days after flashing the new uboot.

If it is ethernet power your referring to, then no, that's ongoing. I've not seen issues with sata power myself.

No, I mean powering up the device itself. When I try to power up the device the serial adapter disconnected (with the normal power cord connected), the leds light up for a split second and then go out, without the fan starting up. However, if I connect the +3.3V on the serial cable to the NSA320 and connect it to the computer, the lights flare up and I can start the device normally (after this I pull out the serial cable, and the device boots up without trouble). Since I'm planning on keeping the device running more or less 24/7 this isn't really a big issue, but of course it is an annoyance that I now have to power up the device with the serial cable if I do decide to turn it off.

Eeh, that is a new one. But then, I never attach the serial Vcc.

A piece of advice for the novice tinkerer, just in case: When connecting a serial cable to the NSA, do not connect vcc to the serial port!
