[iConnect] USB boot and Arch install without serial cable

Install Arch Linux ARM on other devices.

Folks,

I added several links to the end of the first post on this thread; the topics they point to should hopefully answer nearly all questions raised here; in particular, troubleshooting eth0 networking problems after install, safely changing the arcNumber to 2870, controlling the LEDs and recovering a (non-lethally) bricked iConnect without serial cable. HTH.

Thanks a lot, that's very useful (i had difficulties to find some specific info).
Did what you said and it worked, now my arcNumber is ok :)

What you did here is great, well explained and detailed, good job.

Hello igorert,

could you confirm that if i install archlinux arm as describe in this post and modify the arcnumber too of the iconnect wireless station , the iconnect will work finally fine : the Ethernet RJ45 will work fine with a normal router and i will use it for home web hosting without problem ?

so the ssh command line : ./iconnect_install.sh --ext3 --set-arcNumber will install archlinux on usb key with ethernet and led
solving problem ?

i must use the ethernet 10/100/1000 working for make a web server hosting at home. does iptable is ready too ?
i have put some post on this forum to find the good device , but its not easy to make the good choice...

because i see a iconnect at my store and it is at the same price than a synology usb station 2 and a pogoplug PRO .. but i don't want to make error by bought the iconnect . so i prefer ask people how know this station

can i use usb for connect a shared printer and usb hard drive (does the speed is good on it) to use as ftp server on the web ?

Thanks for all

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('news1', 'c')ould you confirm that if i install archlinux arm as describe in this post and modify the arcnumber too of the iconnect wireless station , the iconnect will work finally fine

Yes.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 's')o the ssh command line : ./iconnect_install.sh --ext3 --set-arcNumber will install archlinux on usb key with ethernet and led solving problem ?

Right. It's better not to use ext3 if you're installing Arch to a USB stick though.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'c')an i use usb for connect a shared printer and usb hard drive (does the speed is good on it) to use as ftp server on the web?

That should work in general. u-boot is somewhat picky about what USB devices it likes so there is a chance it won't like yours but that's the case with pretty much all similar plug devices afaik - the only way to find out is to try it with the devices you want to use.

same issue after reboot.
power off / remove the usb key / power up + wait booting on normal iconnect / put back the usb key for checking:

mv643xx_eth: MV-643xx 10/100/1000 ethernet driver version 1.4
mv643xx_eth smi: probed
mv643xx_eth_port mv643xx_eth_port.0: eth0: port 0 with MAC address 00:d0:b8:12:01:a3
mv643xx_eth_port mv643xx_eth_port.1: eth1: port 0 with MAC address 00:50:43:5a:1a:2d
...
eth0[0]: could not detect attached switch
eth0[0]: couldn't create dsa switch instance (error -22)

where iconnect stock is
MV-643xx 10/100/1000 ethernet driver version 1.4
mv643xx_eth smi: probed
net eth0: port 0 with MAC address 00:d0:b8:12:01:a3
...
eth0: link up, 100 Mb/s, full duplex, flow control disabled

same driver with different result -> kernel related ?

There is a way to active the wifi of the iconnect by changing config from the USB in other to get ssh connection via wifi ?

I don't know if if this information can help: http://plugcomputer.org/plugforum/index.php?topic=4837
On Debian, it's the same but seems that someone solve the issue by doing a custom kernel: http://lists.debian.org/debian-arm/2011/09/msg00016.html

I active the wifi on iconnect and i see this

/usr/local/sbin/wpa_supplicant -Dralink -ira0 -c /tmp/.ra0.conf

root@iocloud:/# cat /tmp/.ra0.conf
#LLMARKER1334169372
#ll_wifi_enabled=1
update_config=1
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
eapol_version=1
ap_scan=2
fast_reauth=1
network={
ssid="zigomatic"
priority=1
key_mgmt=NONE
wep_key0=xxxxxxxx
wep_tx_keyidx=0
group=WEP40
}
#LLMARKER1334169372

So i suppose that i need to do the same kind of config with archlinux ?

See Troubleshooting installation issues. It's also referenced from the first post on this thread.

thanks igoret

i will look :)

i have done some test try to map the eth1 to eth0 with mii-tool , ifconfig, changing some parameters but no result
may be if possible to map the mac address to eth1 as this one is responding better but link still nok.

What are the dmesg on a gigabit switch ?

switched of arcNumber, i'm still facing a eth0 with no ip assigned.
So via wlan0 ssh : ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.68 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

reboot, same issue

Why it's not up directly ?

my rc.conf is like this:
interface=eth0
address=192.168.1.68
netmask=255.255.255.0
gateway=192.168.1.1

interface=wlan0
address=192.168.1.69
netmask=255.255.255.0
broadcast=
gateway=192.168.1.1

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'm')y rc.conf is like this: <...>

Your rc.conf is wrong. I'd recommend going back to the installed default that will obtain a dynamic DHCP address on eth0 and then following one of the regular Arch guides for setting up networking. If you really, really need the static IP for your eth0, just leave the eth0 section that you have and remove the wlan0 section - things won't work as you expect if you have both. You might also want to look for advice/guides in regular Arch support fora - you're not doing anything iconnect (or even arm) specific anymore...
