NSA 320

Install Arch Linux ARM on other devices.

NSA 320

Postby CookieM » Sat Dec 01, 2012 5:36 pm

Hi Guys,

Bought an NSA 320 a few days ago. Tried out the the default software, quickly realised how terrible it is.

Followed the guide on the main site to install arch linux onto it (HDD in left slot, usb stick in front). I left it for about 30-40 minutes and the HDD activity LED was still flashing, so i decided to reboot it (bad idea?). Upon turning it back on, all the LED's are solid.

I read a thread on here where someone had a similar issue, so i checked the HDD to see if it had done anything to it. It had created the ext2 boot partition with a 1.8M uImage (uImage is 2.8M in the rootfs.tgz). so i deleted all the partitions, created a 16M boot and a 3G root partition, extracted the rootfs and copied over the uImage but the nas still does the same thing.

Not sure where to go from here?

Cheers,

Ollie

Arg. That this is rather fraught with certain HDD's and sector issues it seems. I may have to revisit it's install method to get BC & such into place.

If it is getting stuck at solid lights, the pretty much means it is having an issue with loading the kernel, and the problem can be sorted with a serial console without too much work.

Thanks for quick reply.

Is there a guide anywhere for that? I've not done anything like that before...

Nothing else i can try to get it to boot?

Ok, I needed to be sure.

A serial cable is fairly straight forward. The question is simply which cable/adapter you wish to use.

To be honest, i have no idea what cable i need to use. I'm guessing i will have to do some soldering? (never soldered anything before).

No, you don't *have* to solder at all. This pre-made cable from Adafruit will work perfectly to hook directly to the exposed pins :)

ah, excellent :)

I'm in UK, so postage will cost way too much from there.

Will this work? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-2-0-to-TT ... 520&_uhb=1

EDIT: Found a UK distributer for the adafruit one at a decent price. Thanks :)

Not a problem. That pre-made one is the nice part. Will save you a lot of headache.

The serial port for the 320 & 325 are identical: http://zyxel.nas-central.org/wiki/Serial_port_(NSA325)
