Install Arch Linux ARM on other devices.

installing on an Archos media device or netbook

Postby CPUnltd » Fri Dec 10, 2010 7:38 am

has anyone here successfully installed Arch Linux ARM install on ANY archos device (MID or MP4 player) or ARM-based netbook (Android or WinCE-based systems)? I am looking for something other than Debian to put on my portable devices outside of what came with them. I have a Delstar DS700 netbook and an Archos 5 Internet Tablet (pre-Android) that I'm looking to root and modify. I was told on the Arch Linux forums to snoop around here about these topics to see if I could find answers that I wouldn't find over there (since Arch Linux ARM install IS essentially Arch Linux for ARM)... Anyone have any experience in this or could direct me to where I can find more info on doing such things?

My apologies if I posted in the wrong place, I didn't see a subcategory for "Devices that have had Arch Linux ARM install installed on them" and this seemed like the closest backup section... Thanks in advance!

so you guys haven't built X yet, but that doesn't mean it's not doable... I could probably try some AUR packages from the main Arch repo for getting X built from the ground up. I'll research this as well as consider my options over at Debian. I've put Debian on an older macbook before, so I am not completely unfamiliar with it. Thanks for the info. Will report if I have any success with Arch Linux ARM install before I try Debian... as long as I don't end up bricking anything, I'll be ok, I think...

running into an interesting issue to begin with in this scenario... can't seem to either extract the tar.gz directly to an SD card nor can I copy from the hard drive to the SD card after extraction (certain files refuse to copy over in either case whether I am root or not... which is strange) and I am only experiencing this on the Arch Linux ARM install archive... I wonder if unetbootin will properly extract the .ubi.img for me... will keep playing with this and see where it goes...

started separate thread for the Delstar scenario I'm dealing with in Developer Questions subsection. Will focus this thread on the Archos device once I start that process (hopefully soon). The only Archos devices that I own (that still work) are a PMA 430 (not sure if that is ARM or not) and an Archos 5 (pre-android model) got mine JUST before the Android line hit the market... sigh.

this thread might be coming to an end, as I have found a better device to see about getting Arch Linux ARM install onto. If I am unable to sell my Archos, then I may continue this project on (as my warranty will be over next month, it will give me the window to play with it as I see fit if I so desire)... Will do my best to notify all of my decision in my next post... my main setback at the moment is the devices inability to be recognized by any linux computer I have connected it to so far. May attempt a windows PC sometime soon, just to see if the issue is on the device side of things.

My soon-to-be new device will be getting it's own thread and more focus as soon as I am able to get my hands on it officially.

if anyone knows how to unbrick an Archos 5 (gen6) device, I am willing to dedicate mine to this purpose (as of now, it is so useless to me, it's painful.. all it does is go into recovery, then reboot into recovery... I'm slightly pissed because Archos sent me back a different MID on my last RMA because the one I sent them had a screen protector (and a larger hard drive) and the one I got backcame with the peel-off crap that comes with a brand new device... but the one I got back refused to be recognized by any PC (regardless of OS) and now is stuck in a recovery loop... It's officially out of warranty now, so it doesn't matter what I do to it... (best $200, I ever spent... :P)

I too am interested in this topic. I have an Archos 605, a gen 5 device, with a 30 GB flash drive. It works, so I don't want to brick it.

I realize this is an old post but I just joined the forum.
