is there a way to stop the fan or even better to query the disk state (it is in my garage/cellar) ?

I use hddtemp to determine which drives of mine are asleep, and as a nice side effect, I also get the temperature of the ones that are spinning! :P
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '# hddtemp /dev/sd?
/dev/sda: ST1000VM002-9ZL162: 26 C
/dev/sdb: ST1000VM002-9ZL162: 27 C
/dev/sdc: ST1000VM002-9ZL162: 27 C
/dev/sdd: ST1000VM002-9ZL162: 24 C
/dev/sde: Generic USB SD Reader: drive supported, but it doesn't have a temperature sensor.
/dev/sdf: ST3160812AS: drive is sleeping')

How do you have 5 HDD in a 2 bay NAS? Are some attached via the USB connectors?

Oh, what I posted was only an example from my home backup server (Xeon quad core w/ 24GB memory :D).
