Delstar DS700 installation

Install Arch Linux ARM on other devices.

Delstar DS700 installation

Postby CPUnltd » Sun Dec 12, 2010 12:57 am

not sure if this fits here, (I'd suggest a subcategory under PlugComputers for those attempting/successfully completing installs on devices other than the standards listed... my endeavor being a prime example) but I'm working to get anything other than WinCE installed on a Delstar DS700 ARM-based netbook.

So far, copying the tar.gz to SD has failed because some files refuse to copy.

Now copying ubi.img directly to SD and will report back with results

Searching for any other information on installing on this device at all (found an Ubuntu thread about installing that distro on this device, but can't find the link again... will look and post so other eyes can help me look through the content and figure something out)

If any other developments around this subject come my way, will post them here so I can collect all the info I come across in one place and see if this is possible.

Also plan on checking out Debian as another option for this netbook (as suggested by the admin here).

Thanks in advance for everyone's help that does get around to helping me.

unfortunately not... this device refused to boot after a couple of attempts and flashing it went nowhere fast, so I had to send it back for a refund. I am not giving up on the idea in general, I will be getting a ARM-based handheld gaming device that I plan to experiment with Arch Linux ARM install, archmobile and compiling from scratch (probably in that order) that is bootable from SD AND I have another portable arm tablet (SmartQ V5II) that I may test (once things have reached a level of functional Xorg or Wayland support, because this is a tablet that is touchscreen only... unless USB OTG functionality is already supported in Arch Linux ARM install, or ArchMobile, so I can connect a Keyboard to this device) once I get a chance to look into whether the Arch Linux ARM install "ISO" is usable for it or else I may have to get the raw image to be packaged up in the SmartQ SDK... will open a new thread in this respect (though I think I might already have, not sure) and take things from there... thanks for getting back to me and touching base on this, as I forgot to come back and mention that I had to return that netbook. I have one other no-name netbook that I might test with if I am unable to sell it as is... that one currently runs WinCE6 (the Delstar ran WinCE5), so it may be better for testing than the Delstar... but there is NO documentation I can find on this device, so I'm not sure what can be done with it at this point.

Officially calling this topic dead... I no longer have this device (and would never pawn it off to my worst enemy after paying HIM/HER to take it off my hands) but I have been playing with a spinoff of Arch Linux ARM install on a device known as Open Pandora (which technically qualifies as a netbook/UMPC ( www.openpandora.org ) and have experienced a successful "port" of sorts spearheaded by an online presence I only know as wejp. He has a website showing how to take the Arch Linux ARM install image he's edited, extract it to an SD card and run it (with X and openbox desktop) on the Pandora. I have been testing packages from the AUR for standard Arch Linux and a LOT of packages have been building and working fine. I have littered the comments section of a good number of AUR packages with notes stating that they build and run on ARM. If there is no word on this stuff happening on this forum, there should've been a LONG time ago (haven't searched yet, or if I found it before, it's been a while since I was last on, so I've essentially forgotten) since I have personally been playing with this on the Pandora for at least 3 or 4 months now... Will check around for a topic on this already, if there isn't, I'll be starting one soon...
