systemctl not working

Failed to get D-Bus connection: No connection to service manager.

I am trying to modify the SMILE plug networking configuration based on information from the ArchLinux wiki.
However systemctl just does not work.

I am get this error shown above for any systemctl call - any ideas why? Or how to fix?

I couldn't find any help at http://www.smileplug.com/
Maybe that image isn't systemd yet. What does this say
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'ls -l /sbin/init')
And
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'uname -a')
