5.10.y aarch64 testing kernel available for RPi4

Postby graysky » Sat Dec 26, 2020 2:27 pm

The RPi Foundation has been actively developing the 5.10.y kernel for some time with plans to switch to it as the default kernel once deemed stable. Eventually, the official linux-raspberrypi4/linux-raspberrypi kernels will move from the 5.4.y branch to the 5.10.y branch.

For now, I am building and testing a linux-raspberrypi4 package for aarch64 and am making it available to the community. If you would like to use/test it, you have several options:

1. Use my unofficial repo, instructions are here. Note that I am only building for aarch64*.
or
2. See my fork of PKGBUILDs and build your own kernel.

*I am also hosting a kodi-rpi-git package for aarch64. It has the same hardware accelerated decoding as the official package for armv7h.

Could you make something about F2FS support in kernel? It's fantastic kernel but I'm still using SD Cards and F2FS can make sd live longer and propably marginally better speed. For now I can't mount rootfs with F2FS using your kernel.

I found some explanation about F2FS configs here:

F2FS (with compression) support is in the kernel.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '% zgrep -i f2fs /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_F2FS_FS=m
CONFIG_F2FS_STAT_FS=y
CONFIG_F2FS_FS_XATTR=y
CONFIG_F2FS_FS_POSIX_ACL=y
CONFIG_F2FS_FS_SECURITY=y
# CONFIG_F2FS_CHECK_FS is not set
# CONFIG_F2FS_FAULT_INJECTION is not set
CONFIG_F2FS_FS_COMPRESSION=y
CONFIG_F2FS_FS_LZO=y
CONFIG_F2FS_FS_LZ4=y
CONFIG_F2FS_FS_ZSTD=y
CONFIG_F2FS_FS_LZORLE=y
')

You're wanting F2FS root partition if I'm reading your post right. Please start a new thread on that topic.

Hi, thanks for your efforts on making kernel 5.10 and kodi 19 available for testing. I'm currently trying it out (using your repo) and am running into an issue using kodi-rpi-git:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '/usr/lib/kodi/kodi-gbm: error while loading shared libraries: libdav1d.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
')
It seems kodi-rpi-git in your repo is still compiled against dav1d-0.7.1-1 while upstream is:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'pacman -Ql dav1d
local/dav1d 0.8.1-1
')
I got it running for now by building dav1d-0.7.1-1 locally and was very happy to see that the pesky screen tearing is indeed gone from kodi navigation menus, thanks again!

Thanks for the post, luukvaal. Yes, I need to rebuild it. Should be live within the hour. Yes, that tearing was an artifact of the fkms driver. The kms driver is amazingly smooth running 1080p@60 fps. On my screens, the colors are also more vivid vs fkms too (darker blacks particularly). They have really done a excellent job with Matrix 19 in general but particularly for RPis with hardware decoding for both h264 and x264.

Big thank you to all who helped test out and provided feedback on the rpi-5.10.y series. We have officially pushed it into production for both linux-raspberrypi and linux-raspberrypi4. Effective immediately, I will stop hosting my unofficial repo as all packages therein should be in your favorite official mirror by now.
