An ovpn file store the configuration for an openvpn connection for both client and server.
It's basically the same as openvpn's example configs "client.conf" and "server.conf" in "/usr/share/openvpn/examples/",
just with ovpn extension instead of conf.

I assume you've followed A basic L3 IP routing configuration at OpenVPN page on the ArchWiki to create your keys and certificates and set your own OpenVPN server.

On the ArchWiki example there're separated files for keys, certificates and config file.
The template bellow is of a client ovpn file which embed all the keys, certificates and config file.
My main reason for using an embedded ovpn is for an Android based client.
On Android I found that the reduced privileges don't work so I commented those out.
I also added "key-direction 1" before the content of ta.key.

I recommend on OpenVPN for Android by Arne Schwabe which display all the connection output on front so the easier to troubleshoot.

Here's my empty client.ovpn example, you'll need to add inside it the keys and certificates files content.
