Mount Ext HDD

Postby CranialBlaze » Mon Aug 27, 2012 5:39 am

I am now to PI and have very limited experience with linux, mostly ubuntu and a few month with a web server via SSH so I m comfortable with the command line, prefer it actually.

Anyway, I have gotten my Pi setup with all the software I plan on using with it, still figuring out samba but thats a minor problem and requires me getting the HDD to mount first.

PLugged in my USB3 drive into a powered USB hub, not working, put in another SD with Bodhi and same problem so I moved the drive over to a USB2 case and then it started working, back to Arch and still no joy, found a few forums about mount and pmount and another one about domount (auto-mounting) and what I basically learnt is that drives not detecting at all so I am either missing a driver or an app or something that's not turning up in my searches.

If I can get the drive mounted I can sort out samba and take my Pi live, not really keen on switching over to Bodhi, its pretty but from what I understand is Arch is the more powerful and ultimately flexible to work with once you get to know it, the steep learning curve pays off in the end and all.

Hoping someone here can help me or steer me in a helpful direction.

Thanks

I would check if it shows up in `lsusb` and `dmesg`

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('xenoxaos', 'I') would check if it shows up in `lsusb` and `dmesg`

Are those folders?

They are commands you type in a terminal.
As a side issue you might be asked to give output of other terminal commands, example cat /proc/cpuinfo, then you realise cat means "print out" and then conclude (wrongly) you can open that file in an editor. Once you see these principles things become easier to understand.

Ok I get it, i am somewhat comfortable with terminal. Had the good sense to learn dos many years ago and the adjustment to linux was not that hard, generally the commands are more logic based, but running a few commands in putty to achieve basic things on a web server is a far cry from putting together an entire Arch build on a Pi.

probably should of included in the OP, but http://www.mybiteofpi.com/guides.html is the guide I followed, i added packer and samba on after that, basically tells you everything my systems running.

Will be back at the Pi this evening so can carry on working at it.

Thanks

pacman -Syy udev-automount

Looked like udev was already on their, followed the Arch guide that required creating 2 files, cant remember.

Spoke to someone else, friend of a friend and he is pretty sure that fuse & ntfs-3g are not installed so will have a look into these 3 then.

Ok checked and udev-automount ntfs-3g and fuse are all installed.

Ran dmesg and pmount and both indicate that the drive is present ont he USB, it is however not mounting it in a place I can actually access.

I had the same problem, turns out it was a crappy USB hub. Got a new one from Amazon,

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003Z4 ... 04_s00_i00

and the drive was recognized immediately.
