Can't login after update

Postby pushpop » Thu Sep 06, 2012 2:35 am

Hi all, new to the forums so forgive me and whatnot. I'm also somewhat new to linux (~1yr Ubuntu) so forgive me that as well!

Now then,
I have a raspi running archlinux arm (hence why I am here) and I have managed to get myself into a bit of a pickle! I can no longer log in to my pi.
Over ssh I get "Server Unexpectedly Closed Network Connection" (PuTTY)

I have one user (not root) logged in on the device, and when I try sudo su, it prompts password, then says
"System is booting up.

Sorry, try again."

I can run commands with this user, but I can't do much of value, like run halt or unmount my drive to try to reboot.

I think this started after installing MPD(Music Player Daemon) and trying to get that working. Of course this included a Pacman -Syu so I would guess that is more likely to do something strange. Anyway, without being able to log into root, It seems like I am kind of screwed, since I can't even reboot, but any help is sincerely appreciated!

The "System is booting up" Line is most curious to me. Does anyone know anything about that?

Thanks a bunch!

Edit: I have tried different IPs for ssh and as I said, on the device itself. I am certain I am typing in the correct password.

If you get "System is booting up" in the console, then is running thru DAEMONSS line and may be stuck.
After pacman -Syu did you run sync before reboot? Btw, a USB keyboard alt ctrl del plugged into rpi should reboot it

Wow, that was so simple. A reboot fixed it. I am not sure how I never came across the ctrl + alt + del thing. Is that standard to unix or just arch?

I think I must not have done the sync... Can you explain how to do that, and perhaps why it is important?
Thanks!

Simple command:$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'sync')
This ensures that the storage has flushed all changes to disk (sd/usb/etc)

Ctrl alt del is configurable. It's in /etc/inittab, but with upcoming systemd I don't know if that still applies.
When in a window session I think it's disabled, something for you to try?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pepedog', 'C')trl alt del is configurable. It's in /etc/inittab, but with upcoming systemd I don't know if that still applies.

Yeah Ctrl alt del worked, and fixed it all. VERY good tip to know thank you. I have unplugged the pi unsafely before and it ruins that system. (rainbow square of death) I think there should be a way to recover from that, but I haven't managed it.

Put card in windows or other machine
The first partition is fat, rename uImage, then rename kernel_emergency.img to uImage, safely remove card and boot on raspberry pi
ou have a busybox system where you can mount, and so on
