Kernel 3.8 with F2FS for the PI

Postby moonman » Sun Apr 28, 2013 4:36 pm

Finally compiled 3.8 branch. The biggest change is F2FS built in. You can reformat your sd card and it should boot from sd card formatted F2FS (tested). Also added BFQ io scheduler which you can try out on sd (latest version has some enhancements for flash storage) or your spinning hard drives.

Hello everyone,

I am wondering why kernel 3.8 is not being used as the default? The reason I ask is that I am going to build one for my PI and since I see it is not the default, should I be concerned with some problems it may have that I am not aware of?

From their GitHub source. Still testing phase. I wrote to the guy 2 days ago asking when 3.8 will be default, also asked if raspbian could do the dkms thing and remove the nasty out of tree 8192 patch (popcornmix and asb)

Holy crap its still building. Did not setup distcc for the pi yet, thought leaving it overnight would be enough.

I'm not very good at Linux, but ... is it possible to build a kernel for Raspberry Pi on a desktop? If yes, could somebody show me all things (e.g. the configuration files ....) I need to change?

I missed f.e. "mkfs.f2fs" until now (also on x86). How should f2fs be created or will this come with the official 3.8 release?

Thanks.

Installing alarm on f2fs partition will be tricky. I left the details out on purpose.

1. you need f2fs tools from aur https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/f2fs-tools/
2. rasperry pi image comes formatted as ext4, so you will have to install the image, copy all the files somewhere, reformat the sd card and then copy all the files back (use cp -a )

Thanks, i have overlooked the f2fs tools in aur. :(
For alarm f2fs is not so important for me (if this would work) so i will replace the ext4 partition only.
