Problem with HDD

Postby xpt » Sat Jul 23, 2016 1:21 am

Hi there!

I've a RPi2 running ArchLinux ARM on a 500 GB HDD. A few days ago, I had a issue with my disk after I upgrade all the system (kernel, firmware,etc) and reboot it. My journalctl shows:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
jul 22 03:53:06 rpi2 kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] tag#0 UNKNOWN(0x2003) Result: hostbyte=0x07 driverbyte=0x08
jul 22 03:53:06 rpi2 kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] tag#0 Sense Key : 0x4 [current] [descriptor]
jul 22 03:53:06 rpi2 kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] tag#0 ASC=0x0 ASCQ=0x0
jul 22 03:53:06 rpi2 kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] tag#0 CDB: opcode=0xa1 a1 06 20 00 00 00 00 00 00 e5 00 00
')
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
jul 20 09:47:51 rpi2 kernel: EXT4-fs (sda2): error count since last fsck: 1
jul 20 09:47:59 rpi2 kernel: EXT4-fs (sda2): initial error at time 1469091220: __ext4_get_inode_loc:4043: inode 262705: block 1048707
jul 20 09:47:59 rpi2 kernel: EXT4-fs (sda2): last error at time 1469091220: __ext4_get_inode_loc:4043: inode 262705: block 1048707
')

The problem is that the system run slow and sometimes video freeze (I run it with Kodi).
So, to solve it, I changed the disk, downgraded kernel and firmware, changed the power supply, etc, and it don't fix it :(
I want to know if it is only a problem with my HDDs or my Pi. I think is weird that just when I upgraded my system failed and that I've 2 HDD broken.
What do you think?

Regards,

It sounds like you need to run fsck to fix the file system. But make sure to back up anything important first.

If you are having numerous issues with file system errors, I think one factor could be an inadequate power supply for the load your Pi is carrying. Another is if you shut down the system without syncing first and doing a proper shutdown.

I don't know about Raspberry Pi 2, but on my model B, sometimes connectors might get dust in them at critical points, or a reboot might clear up what looked like a totally broken filesystem. Depends on how heavy a load the Pi is carrying. Remember it all goes through that one USB bottleneck, as far as I understand, even with newer models.

Running a short and long test via smartctl will at least from the SMART system tell you if you have physical damage. Check the Arch Wiki. I agree with the previous poster about low power being a potential.
