Is ARMv6 still recommended over ARMv7 for RasPi 3?

Postby motoko » Tue Jan 30, 2018 7:26 am

Hi guys,
I have a RasPi 3b and would like to put Arch on it. I've used Raspbian but it's a huge pain and I prefer Arch for everything anyway. I was delighted when I found Arch for ARM!

I've noticed that Wiki says that you should use ARMv6 instead of v7. Is that still the case? Any idea it latest Raspbian uses v7?

Thanks everyone! Can't tell you how happy I am to have come found Arch few years ago and I'm happy there's Arch for ARM.

Whose wiki?

We recommend using the ARMv7 (Pi 2 install) if you are looking to use the GPU at all, because there is no vendor provided AArch64-compatbile libraries for accessing it. If you have no need for the GPU, and want 64-bit userland, then make use of the Pi 3 install.

Pi - ARMv6
Pi 2 - ARMv7 (can run ARMv6)
Pi 3 - ARMv8 (AArch64, can run ARMv7)
Pi Zero - ARMv6 (basically a tiny Pi 1)
