[SOLVED] Forking services not working with systemd 237.0

Postby doragasu1 » Sat Feb 10, 2018 3:00 pm

Yesterday I upgraded my Raspberry Pi 2 server, and some services were failing (namely smbd, guacd, tomcat8). I realized that the three of them were forking type systemd services, and that invoking the commands from the command line worked perfect.

So suspecting something is wrong with systemd, I downgraded to version 236.81 and everything went back to normal.

I confirmed that trying to start other services I were not using, of the forking type also failed (e.g. dhcpcd). It looks like systemd does not detect that the service has forked, or that the pid file has been created, and after a timeout, it kills the started process.

Is this problem confirmed? Should I file a bug report somewhere?

This appears to be an innate change in systemd 237, and has been seen in Debian as well. (google/duckduckgo "systemd 237 forking dnsmasq"), and seems that it might be related to https://bugs.debian.org/889144 and ultimately https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/8085

It looks like version 237.31 solved the issue (at least for me).
