pi zero does not enter multi-user.target without monitor

Postby deep42thought » Sat Jul 17, 2021 6:36 pm

Hi,
my raspberry pi zero does not reach multi-user.target anymore, when there is no monitor attached via hdmi. If I have a monitor attached at boot, it boots up correctly, but the monitor stops working, when "fb0: switching to vc4drmfb from simple" appears in the journalctl log. Since I want to use this raspi headless, I don't really care about the monitor issue (I guess, it tries to set it to some inappropriate mode: this is a dvi monitor attached via an hdmi-to-dvi adapter) and have not cared about such issues in the past - IOW: maybe, the monitor-failure is much older than the multi-usert.target-not-reached error. However, since the raspi does not reach multi-user.target it fails to set up my network client and all other stuff, that I want to run on the raspi - also, I cannot really debug the raspi in this mode, as I cannot access it without wifi.

Any idea, where I should turn my attention to? I have a second raspi zero, which also runs headless and fails to hook up to my wifi - but I haven't investigated in this one, as I assume, it's the identical issue.

regards,

restoring the state of a few days ago fixes it:

if I only upgrade the kernel (e.g. install linux-raspberrypi 5.10.50-1), it is broken again.

thanks, this looks like it!
In my defense: the default-ordering of the threads is quite strange (they're not ordered by date of last comment, but rather count of comments or something like that), so I didn't find this recent post.
