Pi2 5.10.64-1 to 5.10.73-1 kernel upgrade

Postby pezz » Fri Oct 15, 2021 5:30 am

Howdy,

Just upgraded a pretty stock install with:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'core/linux-raspberrypi 5.10.64-1 -> 5.10.73-1 28.85 MiB
core/systemd 249.4-2 -> 249.5-1 5.60 MiB
core/systemd-libs 249.4-2 -> 249.5-1 0.43 MiB
core/systemd-sysvcompat 249.4-2 -> 249.5-1 0.01 MiB
extra/git 2.33.0-1 -> 2.33.1-1 5.08 MiB')
Now it won't boot. The Pi is headless and remote so I have no further info right now, just posting as a heads-up in case there is an actual issue and folks might want to hold-off on upgrading.

Cheers.

Same problem here with a RPi3, completely broken after the kernel update.

What worked for me:
1. extract uSD card and plug into another linux machine
2. mount temporary file systems
3. mount boot partition
4. chroot to the uSD card (this requires qemu-arm-static, there are many guides online)
5. downgrade the kernel to a previous version (which you will find in pacman's cache). I am currently back to 5.4.35-1 but I think any version is fine
6. unmount everything
7. uSD card back into RPi, boot, everything fine

Doing $this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'sudo pacman -Syu') still proposes the update to linux-raspberrypi-5.10.73-1 that broke everything, but maybe this time I will wait :lol:

Well, at least I learned some new things...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('renkei', 'D')one https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/4631

I just pushed 5.10.47-2, please try it. According to the comments by Phil in the issue, it should fix the boot breakage.

Pi does not boot after update

Postby loki279 » Fri Oct 15, 2021 9:52 am

Hi,

I installed some updates today (new kernel was part of the update). After this my Pi is not booting any longer. The last message I ca see is "random: crng init done"
I googled this message and came across the root partiion might be set wrongly to to took out the SD-Card and wanted to have a look on the files in /boot

So, /boot is empty completly, No files at all

The updated must have deleted these files.

How can I recreate the files I need? Is there a template around somewhere? I know I had some parameters set for usb current and other stuff, I guess I can find these again later, for now I just need to be able to boot again.

Any held appreciated!

sure you got that version number correctly?

pacman -Syu found 5.10.73-2, which makes the penguin fly again ...

hereby confirm it works on a Pi2

Greetings, stef
