Raspberry Pi 2B+ no longer boots after latest kernel update

Postby tsbarnes » Thu Oct 14, 2021 3:57 pm

I updated to kernel version 5.10.73-1-raspberrypi-ARCH this morning and now my Raspberry Pi no longer boots. It starts up, but the kernel crashes during boot with a NULL pointer exception. Any suggestions on how to get it running again, maybe a way to temporarily downgrade the kernel?

I was able to downgrade the kernel by inserting the SD card into my laptop and manually extracting the package for the previous version (5.10.64) and now it's booting again, but I hope this is fixed soon so I can update my kernel again.

I experienced the same issue on a Raspberry Pi Zero W. I downgraded to linux-raspberrypi-5.10.64-1-armv6h.pkg.tar.xz via chroot for now which fixed the problem.

Command for anybody who needs it:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/linux-raspberrypi-5.10.64-1-armv6h.pkg.tar.xz')

Debug info such as journalctl output or even a photo of the screen is needed. I do not have RPI2 for testing.

Kernel null pointer dereference after update to 5.10.73

Postby renkei » Thu Oct 14, 2021 7:30 pm

Today, on my Pi2 a pacman -Syu updated the kernel from 5.10.64 to 5-10.73. After a reboot the sytem cannot boot anymore, see the screenshot. Is this a known issue? Any idea? The SD-Card seems to be fine because I can still mount the filesystems with a USB-Cardreader on another Linux machine.

Unfortunately I can't get a screenshot at the moment, and it crashes before journald starts so there's nothing in the journal about it. I'll try to get a screenshot later tonight or tomorrow.

I have exactly the same picture. Can't boot with my usual config and without it

Can one of you affected users open an issue upstream? Reference the 5.10.64 to 5.10.73 update: https://github.com/archlinuxarm/PKGBUIL ... 59415eb8ce

That will give them the two commits of their kernel code in question and may help them identify the cause.
