Model B , Rev 1 , i tried connecting my external USB HDD and it results into disconnecting Ethernet connection though i was able to connect my Pen drive successfully the USB HDD is a self powered HDD and i guess Pi cannot pass the power to HDD what are the alternatives i dont really want to open my HDD and make connections , i read something about Y cable would it work ?

Yes, the pi cannot power this. I have a hard drive with it's own power adapter, the usb is plugged directly on the pi.
Have a powered hub plugged into other and wondered what would happen if I plugged hd into that (still with it's own power). It booted but very weird problems
That y cable has one plug with data and power, other plug with power only. You need cable with data only on one plug, power only on other
