As an old geezer I have to wax nostalgic; my first virtual memory unix machine (the original bsd) was a Digital Equipment VAX 11/780, the size of 3 or 4 chest high refrigerators side by side. It had 2 meg of ram. The disk drive, 80 meg, was about the size of a washing machine. I don't remember how much we paid for it but no doubt it was many tens of thousands of dollars. There was no windowing system; it was all command prompt on ascii terminals (connected by LONG wires going to our offices from the machine room).
