telnet text corruption

Postby Nyromith » Sun Jun 02, 2013 8:35 pm

Hello,
I'm using my pi as a headless server, and found Arch to be the best OS for me. Everything is working except telnet. Every time I'm trying to telnet the server the text gets corrupted after the kernel version line. I can barely see anything and there is no feedback at all. I tried Raspbian before and telnet worked fine. My main OS is Debian Wheezy using XFCE. I also tried telneting localhost from within an ssh session, and got the same problem.

For example, in the screenshot below, I entered the username at the white dot, then the password, and got this messed up line. On a TTY I usually get nothing at all, but sometimes things show up after a few enters. For reference, this is my prompt from an ssh session:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[root@terminal ~]#')

I wasn't able to determine what is causing this corruption, so help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Maybe it is related to your terminal type, the default may not match your terminal emulator on the remote system and that can affect some applications but not all.

I find I need to run as TERM=vt100 as that is what my system says it emulates, but for apps that require color, I redefine the terminal for them - specifically lynx browser in my case, I set to xterm.

What happens if you type the following:

echo $TERM

You can redefine or define it in your bashrc.

$TERM says xterm on xfce, linux on a tty and the matching value on the server. Unfortunately vt100 didn't help.

Why telnet?

I don't have anything valuable on the pi, and when I connect to it from within my home network I don't see a reason to stress the poor computer with unnecessary encryption.

Seriously, ssh isn't that heavy.
