Super Nintendo emulation.

Postby Wesman26 » Sun Jul 14, 2013 6:48 pm

So I've been trying to get an adequate emulator running on my Raspberry pi for like 6 months off and on to no avail. Snes9x is the only one that compiles, but I can't get playable performance out of it. I've tried retroarch, retroarch-git, and retroarch-rbp-git and they all fail (seemingly at different spots during the build).

I'm not sure what to do, because literally everywhere I've looked it seems that I need some version of retroarch. I guess I'm here mostly to ask if anyone else is having this issue, or if it is even possible for me at this point to have an adequate emulator on my raspberry pi with Archlinux. I really don't want to use a different distribution, but I'm seriously running out of options.

At my wit's end,

Have you tried PiSNES yet? https://code.google.com/p/pisnes/

I have yet to try it myself, but it can apparently run most games at full speed. It's based on an old version of SNES9x, so I've heard the sound emulation is not as good as the new versions, if that's going to be an issue. It's not in the repos but it might be worth a shot.

I had heard of it, but I didn't really like the idea of using an emulator that I don't update with pacman. I also got some tunnel vision trying to get retroarch working, particularly since I'm positive someone else using archlinuxarm must have it working on the pi. I'm going to try it out and post results. Thank you for reminding me of it!

So I'm trying out pisnes and it's working just fine! I can play Super Mario World and Super Mario Kart no problem. I'm a little disappointed to see that Super Mario RPG just gives me a black screen along with Kirby Superstar. This is somewhat expected since they both relied on special chips and blah blah blah, but I'd like to play with it more and see if I can't at the very least get Super Mario RPG running. Just for reference, I'm using the overclock settings recommended on the pisnes page.
