Auto login at boot

Postby Passiday » Sat May 23, 2015 7:40 pm

I have archlinux ARM installed on a RasPi that drives some data processing operation where no user interaction is expected.

My archlinux installation is pretty bare, just a few extra packages necessary for the job. Therefore, no X.

The PC is equipped with a keyboard but the hardware is locked away, not accessible for any outsider, only at admin routine. It is expected that the PC is powered up and just starts its processing.

The operation is handled by Python script that is executed at user login (/.bashrc and /.bash_profile).

The only thing left to implement is auto login for the particular user, right after successful boot. Please give me some hints, I come from Ubuntu world, the archlinux feels somewhat alien to me.

One of the best things about archlinux is the very complete wiki ;)

I believe this is what you are looking for.

Can you, please, clarify: the "virtual console" is something that is not visible on the screen? Ie, the console that is established over the serial ttyAMA0 port.

If so, it's not exactly what I am looking for. I need the auto-login happen on the very screen what the HDMI-attached monitor displays.

TTY/Serial = (serial) console
VTY = virtual console

The console that you use on Arch is a virtual console (assuming you are using the default) started with getty, for fun reading see here:

or the wikipedia page on them here:
