Kernel 4.2.4-1-ARCH on sun4i (Hackberry) Ethernet not workin

Postby inti » Wed Oct 28, 2015 10:01 am

Hi all,

for the last days i have tried to get the software of my well serving Miniand Hackberry up to date.
After experimenting a lot with u-boot I have got a functional version from head of uboot-sunxi, which boots mainline and sunxi kernels from sd and tftp.

Now to the interesting part:
For the last months i used a Kernel out of HEAD of the linux-sunxi Repo with handmade config which works sufficient but, as time goes by, is a bit "matured".
With the new Kernel from ALARMv7 the system boots but i am not able to get the ethernet working.
The device is existent as eth0, "ip link set down" yields success but ip link set up raises the error "SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device ".

dmesg | grep emac yields
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
[ 0.147263] reg-fixed-voltage emac-3v3: could not find pctldev for node /soc@01c00000/pinctrl@01c20800/emac_power_pin@0, deferring probe
[ 3.723586] sun4i-emac 1c0b000.ethernet: using random MAC address <REDACTED>
[ 3.823948] sun4i-emac 1c0b000.ethernet: eth0: at e090a000, IRQ 18 MAC: <REDACTED>
[ 25.536247] sun4i-emac 1c0b000.ethernet eth0: could not find the PHY
[ 25.540682] sun4i-emac 1c0b000.ethernet eth0: cannot probe MDIO bus
')

Googling the issue gave me https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/linux-sunxi/B4rPpWJSoV4 as a result, i have already compiled the kernel with the configuration changes advised without rectifying the issue.

As the USB-Ports seem to be unpowered also (similar reg-fixed-voltage messages concerning usb1 and usb2, 3v3 and 5v5) I suspect (take it as an uneducated guess) the same issue as in https://github.com/linux-sunxi/linux-sunxi/issues/158.

As I am lacking the knowledge in kernel development, even though the patch mentioned in issue 158 worked for me, can anyone give me a hint how I can use a shiny new mainline kernel in the device?

Thanks in advance,
inti

**EDIT*** Overread the "supported" part in the forums description - feel free to move to "Community Supported" - sorry about the fuss.

Has anyone an idea where to ask? Is anyone even using the hackberry anymore?
As I understood the the recent tree of the kernel should support the hackberry for headless usage.

*shameless bump*
