xbmc-rbp 12.3

Postby Romzetron » Tue Mar 04, 2014 6:14 am

Since the three x86/x64 Arch PCs around my apartment are running XBMC 12.3, I decided to take a crack at updating the xbmc-rbp ARM package to install 12.3 instead of 12.2. It seems to have worked the first time, but I'm recompiling a second time on the pi after making one minor fix. I won't know how well it works until tomorrow, since I haven't figured out that cross compiling thing yet, but here's the update:

Just got into using git a couple months ago, and this is my first time working with github. I was a little hesitant to fire off a pull request without a little feedback first.

Did you compile on the pi? Last time I tried it would fail half way through.

Compiled and ran yesterday without any issues. I'll know tonight if compiling again works, but so far, so good.

I should add that I'm using a Model B pi. And I did have a few crashes in the beginning due to running out of memory. Had to set gpu_mem_512=64 in /boot/config.txt. I also had the xbmc-rbp 12.2 package installed prior to compiling, so all the dependencies seemed to be in place when I installed. I might set up a fresh installation of Arch on a new SD card tonight, and then install the compiled package fresh to see what happens.

The only difference between the Model A and the Model B do not matter to video. What matters is the revision being 2 or 3, with 512M vs 256M.

Also rename the .xbmc folder with settings in before running a version jump

I left the /var/lib/xbmc/.xbmc settings folder from 12.2 in place (which was happily syncing with a mysql database on a different computer running 12.3), uninstalled xbmc-rbp, and then installed my 12.3 compiled version on the pi which picked up the settings without any problems.

Do you mean that the .xbmc settings directory should be renamed automatically if jumping from 12.2 to 12.3, or should I manually rename it to test what happens with a fresh install?

The old settings might carry something forward that doesn't work on later version. This is just something to try.

Ok, I had a little setback due to the SD card filling up while compiling. Back on track after a little cleanup and head shaking.

Appears to have built successfully, if anyone wants to try it out.

Edit: It seems to be running fine tonight.
