Adding support for the C.H.I.P.

This is for any ARMv7 device that we do not officially support.

Adding support for the C.H.I.P.

Postby kevlar1818 » Fri Aug 26, 2016 3:47 am

Hi ALARM devs,

I'll start by saying I love your work. I use Arch Linux ARM on many SBCs, and your distribution has everything I've come to expect from Arch.

I'd like to try my hand at adding a new piece of hardware, the C.H.I.P.: http://docs.getchip.com/chip.html

NextThingCo. provides a Buildroot config for the C.H.I.P., so I imagine a lot of the heavy-lifting is mostly done: https://github.com/NextThingCo/CHIP-buildroot

Is there a guide I could reference on how one would go about submitting a hardware platform to ALARM?

Thanks!

The only part of this that ends up mattering:
- We don't use buildroot, and can't, as PKGBUILD doesn't work that way at all.
- They need to get all the necessary support into a modern, mainline kernel for it to work here and with systemd.

Well there is an R8 device tree:

http://lxr.free-electrons.com/source/ar ... 8-chip.dts

So that has to be a start.

Could just try using an cortex a 8 kernel, with the r8 device tree, and build a system that boots on the c.h.i.p (and for that you would need to work out how the c.h.i.p. boots). Then I just switch on with a serial interface, and see how far the boot process goes before it stalls.

Oh yes, that MALI GPU - don't know how much of a problem that will be. The main MALI graphics set up (lima), the author has (with some reason) had a bit of a strop - so to my mind I'd say that MALI is currently unsupported ....

See this post on the C.H.I.P. forum: https://bbs.nextthing.co/t/archlinux-on-c-h-i-p/7457 and http://www.chip-community.org/index.php/Archlinuxarm_on_chip.
I did not tested, but the responses on that thread are positive.

I would love to see official Arch Linux support for C.H.I.P. , according to their website they are entering mass production the end of this year, so I expect to see more people asking for Arch as it becomes more popular.

this would be awesome.

just had my chip delivered from a stock on a new order. now this board appears to be in full swing it would great to see archlinxarm.org headless support for this.

though i suppose pocketchip support with gui is out of the question?

Hi, I am working on kernel packages for C.H.I.P. I have also a project that builds a rootfs for C.H.I.P, and even NAND images.
https://gitlab.com/chip-archlinux
Currently untested, and requires UART access to C.H.I.P. Images work on MLC flash.
Here is latest build :https://gitlab.com/chip-archlinux/chip-archimage/builds/9884877
